The collection

Twelve ways to answer the same beach light.

Some Strand units sit hard against the sand and take the glare straight off the water all day; others sit a floor or two up and trade that closeness for more wind and a longer view down the coast. Twelve ways to spec it, made to measure for the opening in front of you.

  1. Sunscreen Roller Blinds A fine mesh that holds the sea view while it cuts the glare bouncing straight back off the water — the roller most Strand lounges draw every afternoon. Explore Cream sunscreen roller blind half-drawn across the sliding doors of a Strand beachfront lounge, the surf line still legible through the mesh
  2. Blockout & Double Roller Blinds Total dark for bedrooms, or blockout and sunscreen on one bracket — the ocean by day, real privacy after dark. Explore Espresso blockout roller blind closed over a Strand apartment bedroom window after dark, a strip of False Bay lights showing beside the balcony door
  3. Day/Night (Zebra) Blinds Tune the light band by band without raising the whole blind — privacy from the promenade, view to the water. Explore Sage day/night zebra blinds banded across a Strand dining room's sliding doors, False Bay and the far mountains showing between the sheer stripes
  4. Aluminium Venetian Blinds Slim slats that steer the light and shrug off salt air far better than fabric — the practical pick for a beachfront kitchen or bathroom. Ask about this Ivory aluminium venetian slats tilted open above a Strand kitchen sink, the beach and breaking surf framed under the bottom rail
  5. Cellular Honeycomb Blinds Hexagonal air cells insulate a unit that runs cold once the wind gets up off the water. Ask about this Sand-toned cellular honeycomb blinds lowered over the twin windows of a built-in oak study nook in a Strand apartment, dune grass and sea below
  6. Vertical & Panel Blinds Wide vanes that tilt or draw clear across the sliding-door stacks common on this beachfront. Ask about this Grey panel-track blinds stacked clear of an open sliding door in a Strand lounge, the balcony and False Bay open beyond
  7. Concealed Ceiling-Recess Blinds Raised, the window shows nothing but glass and the ocean — fabric drops from a hidden slot overhead. Ask about this Wide roller blind dropping from a hidden ceiling slot across one glass wall of a Strand corner lounge, the second wall left clear to the bay
  8. External Venetian Blinds Stops the heat outside the glass, on the units that catch the low dawn and dusk sun square-on. Ask about this External aluminium venetian blinds fitted outside the windows of a Strand beachfront block, late sun raking across the facade above the promenade
  9. Roller Shutters Full external sun, glare and privacy control, closed from outside the glass. Shading, not security. Ask about this Aluminium roller shutter run down from its headbox outside a Strand balcony sliding door, the bay and beach curving away to the left
  10. Folding-Arm Awnings Turns a sun-baked balcony back into a usable room, and folds away the moment the wind picks up. Explore Chocolate folding-arm awning wound out from the wall above a Strand balcony at golden hour, teak seating in its shade and the mountain across the bay behind
  11. Zip Screens Zipped side channels hold the mesh taut against the wind that runs straight off the beach. Explore Charcoal zip screen dropped into its side channels across the open end of a Strand balcony, the beachfront still readable through the tensioned mesh
  12. Motorisation & App Control Battery or wired motors, wall switch, remote or phone — the retrofit answer for an existing unit, no chasing walls. Ask about this Hand-held remote sending a motorised roller blind down over the sliding doors of a Strand beachfront lounge, tube motor visible in the headbox

Built for this beachfront

Every window here answers to the same low, hard light

A sea-facing lounge needs the glare taken off the water without losing the swimmers and the surf line. A bedroom needs proper dark, whatever the promenade lights below are doing after sunset. A balcony needs shade that survives a stiff onshore gust without flapping loose. All of that is settled in a single visit, by one consultant, with each window answered in writing.

Finished for this beachfront

The hardware is chosen for direct beachfront exposure, not just the room

Powder-coated, seaside-rated aluminium on anything mounted outside, sealed cassettes rather than open brackets, chain and cord tensioners fitted as standard, and a wind sensor on any motorised awning or zip screen so it retracts ahead of a gust rather than after one. Even the best hardware wants an occasional fresh-water rinse this close to the sand — we say so rather than call anything maintenance-free.

Why Strand is specified differently

A south-facing coastline that still catches the sun at both ends of the day

Strand runs along the north-eastern shore of False Bay, its five kilometres of beach giving the town the longest stretch of swimmable sand on this side of the bay — regularly rated among the warmest, safest swimming water in greater Cape Town, sheltered by the bay itself and by the Hottentots-Holland range rising close behind the town. Beachfront apartment blocks line Beach Road almost the full length of it, most of them sectional title, a mix of straightforward 1970s-to-90s builds with standard aluminium sliding doors and newer, larger-glazed towers further along.

The coastline runs broadly east-west here, so nearly every beachfront unit faces south or south-south-west across the bay. On paper that sounds like the shaded side of the building. It isn't, for two months either side of December: Cape summer pushes sunrise and sunset well south of due east and west, so a south-facing wall still takes direct, low, raking sun in the first and last hour of daylight — precisely when balcony doors are open and the beach outside is busiest. The wind tells its own story: the summer south-easter reaches this corner of the bay, but the mountains behind the town take some of the sting out of it compared with the fully open Atlantic side of the peninsula; winter cold fronts bring a more direct north-westerly instead.

How we specify it: south-facing lounges and bedrooms get sunscreen or blockout roller blinds first, sized for that low dawn-and-dusk sun rather than a midday sun that barely troubles a south wall. Anything mounted outside — an awning, a zip screen, a roller shutter — gets a sealed cassette and a wind-sensor motor, because salt spray and fine airborne sand off the beach are harder on an open bracket than either is alone. And because most of this frontage is sectional title, we check body-corporate rules on external fittings at the first call — interior blinds usually don't need that sign-off, but a balcony bracket almost always does.

  • Five kilometres of beach on the north-eastern shore of False Bay — among the warmest, most sheltered swimming water in greater Cape Town
  • South-facing glass still catches raking sun at sunrise and sunset through Cape summer, even though it's shaded through the middle of the day
  • The Hottentots-Holland range takes some sting out of the summer south-easter here versus the open Atlantic seaboard; winter fronts bring the wind from the north-west instead
  • Mostly sectional title — body-corporate rules typically apply to anything fitted outside the glass line, rarely to blinds mounted inside it
How it works

From enquiry to fitted, in four steps

01

Enquire

Tell us the rooms, the products you're considering, and roughly where along the beachfront you are. Either the chat or the form, and it takes two minutes.

02

Free in-home measure

A consultant comes to your unit, measures every opening on site, checks wind and salt-air exposure, and brings fabric samples.

03

Written quote

An itemised quotation, one line per opening and the lead times stated, so there is no gap between what you saw and what you pay. Some orientation before it arrives: shading on this coast sits somewhere in R1,000 – R7,500 for every square metre, installed. A chain-operated indoor blind is the cheapest option there and a motorised outdoor system the dearest; we charge a minimum on the smallest windows.

04

Made & fitted

Every piece is manufactured to your measurements and installed cleanly by our own team.

About this service

The service, described without the sales talk

Strand Beach Blinds specifies and fits made-to-measure shading along this beachfront and across the Helderberg coast — Gordon’s Bay, Somerset West, Erinvale Golf Estate and Stellenbosch. Roller blinds, day/night blinds, folding-arm awnings and zip screens are all are each cut to the sizes recorded at your own openings. In a beachfront apartment, where a balcony slider and a narrow bathroom window belong to the same flat, there is no standard size worth ordering to.

The steps are the same on every job we take. Start with the form, or with the chat window. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly and the free in-home measure is arranged then and there. On the visit each opening is measured, the exposure and the fixing substrate are checked, and fabric, openness and control are chosen window by window, against the sun and the wind that opening actually deals with. You then get a written quotation, each opening on its own line, lead times included. When you are happy with it, the order goes into manufacture at those dimensions and comes back to be fitted, levelled and shown to you on the day.

Anything you send us are kept for that one call and POPIA governs how. They are never handed to anyone else and never put on a list.

Questions

Before you enquire

Do you cover Gordon's Bay, Somerset West, Erinvale and Stellenbosch as well as Strand?

Yes — Strand's beachfront is our home ground, and we measure and fit across Gordon's Bay, Somerset West, Erinvale Golf Estate and out to Stellenbosch too. Sitting just beyond that line? Put it on the enquiry form and we will confirm either way.

Will salt air and sand ruin exterior or motorised blinds?

Cheap hardware corrodes fast this close to the water — pitted brackets and seized chains within a season or two, made worse here by fine airborne sand as well as salt. We specify sealed cassettes and powder-coated, seaside-rated aluminium on anything mounted outside. Even that hardware benefits from an occasional fresh-water rinse — we won't tell you it's maintenance-free.

My unit faces south — do I still need blinds for sun?

Usually, yes. A south-facing wall is shaded through the middle of the day, but Cape summer pushes sunrise and sunset well south of due east and west, so south-facing glass still catches direct, low sun at both ends of the day for months at a time. Most Strand units end up specifying sunscreen or blockout for exactly this reason.

Does my body corporate need to approve an awning or zip screen?

Often, yes. Most beachfront blocks here are sectional title, and a balcony or external wall is typically common property under South African sectional-title law — so an awning bracket or a zip-screen channel usually needs body corporate sign-off first. Blinds mounted inside the glass line generally don't need that approval. We ask about your scheme's specific rules at the first call.

Are your blinds safe for small children?

A tensioner goes on as standard wherever a blind runs on a cord or a chain. In a nursery or a child's room we would usually go further than that — wand-tilt, cordless or motorised — so tell your consultant which room it is and the quote comes back that way.

What do I pay for the measure and the written quote?

Nothing at all. The visit, the samples, the advice and the written quote per window are free, and ordering afterwards is entirely your call.
